Pleasantly surprised

For some reason I thought that the third scene for my novel was completely new. I was surprised when I opened the file to start writing and found material already present.

The third scene is a phone call between Manon and her father. I forgot that I had decided to move a later phone call to early in the novel. All I had to do was rewrite it to make sense early in the novel, and to add more conflict.

Yay! I needed to finish that scene yesterday, as it rounds out the first chapter. Tonight I'm getting together with the editing group to exchange opening chapters.

The next few scenes will go quickly, as I am mostly editing to add another character.

Whenever I read your progress reports, I feel so ashamed. My 'break' in December continued until lunchtime yesterday, even though I knew I had to get to work. But with the editing group tonight, I should get back on track.

Don't feel bad. I didn't do much with my 2002 Nanowrimo novel, and never even finished that one.

This year, however, I want to take advantage of the free publicity I got in the National Post, which means that I would like to have a final - or almost final version before Nanowrimo 2004. Compared to last year I've been working hard, but I haven't done nearly as much as I hoped. I thought I would do a lot of writing when the office was closed between Christmas and New Year's and ended up not writing at all.

Also, this journal is meant to be about my work on the novel, for the most part. So, sometimes you won't hear from me for a while, but the next post you will see will be about some progress (or lack thereof).
