Inspiration forgotten

Two nights ago I had a dream that felt like the beginnings of a novel. I was dreaming about some crucial turning point, and I knew the backstory and how things were about to progress.

I planned to write it in my LJ, as a place to save this idea.

But I foolishly did not write it down in my journal. And now I remember nothing except some really vague aspects. It had to do with love and betrayal and someone making a choice. It's so aggravating to have let those ideas slip away. I had really detailed background/place/appearances of people, as well as specific lines of dialogue.

Grr.

argh! I so know that feeling... happened to me a couple of weeks ago... I thought I had dreamed a whole book and it was perfect - kept reminding myself to write it down when I woke up and then (needless to say) I forgot the dream...

That happens to me all the time.

Just the other day I woke up with a brilliant song idea stuck in my head. I actually went immediately, sat down at my computer and opened Logic to get the basics down while they were fresh. Unfortunately, Logic takes a while to open, so I opened my e-mail program while I was waiting, and got 25 messages from freecycleto. I remembered that I'd wanted to make filters for that because it was getting unmanageable, and so I thought, "This is the last straw," and made the filters. By the time I was done, I'd forgotten the song idea entirely. (It didn't take long to make the filters, but the act of thinking about them dislodged my consciously keeping the song fragment in my head.)

Oh I could write a million books if I could remember all my dreams. I have several a night and they are all very vivid-colours, voices, locations, but they're gone as soon as I set my feet on the floor.

I have ideas for character quirks and such, but no formal plot idea yet.
