Planning for nanowrimo 2004

I now have the basic idea for this year's nano-attempt. After reading this idea, I would really appreciate if you would answer the 2 questions at the end, which are meant to help generate additional character and plot ideas. Thanks!

Story idea
Dartmoor was an accountant and treasurer for a trading vessel, but when he attempted to assist Luna escape an undesired political marriage, he lost his post. Now he seeks revenge against Lord Valor, Lord Steele, and Captain Fiske, who destroyed his career.

Side plot (thanks to soundofwater, for assistance figuring out the opposite problem/desire)
Now married to Lord Valor, Lady Luna wants to make peace with her brother, but cannot bring herself to trust Steele again.

1. Who might turn out to be an unexpected ally of the main character?

2. Who might turn out to be an unexpected villain?

1. Valor, who really hates being married to Luna, and who was a pawn of the goals of the former Lord Valor, his father, and Luna's parents, who wanted the alliance more than they cared about their children's wants.

2. Luna, who'll turn out to have been a conniving climber who wanted out of the marriage because she had a more strategic one for herself instead of serving her father's interests...

You, uhm, will be changing those names, right? Or are you writing for Harlequin?

Thanks for the suggestions. Very interesting twists, and more devious than I was thinking. I'm not sure what the final names will be. I often don't figure out the characters names until I'm well underway with writing. Last year I was pretty firm on the main character's name (I had her parent's characters in mind when choosing her name), but everything else was up-in-the-air... I eventually started giving characters food names.

With my current approach it couldn't be a harlequin, as (1) the main character's a man and (2) love is not the answer.

1. Valor, who despite his tough, all-business character, will turn out to be a dedicated fair-player who feels that he was duped by ...

2. Lady Luna, who has been playing the victim all this time, but had in fact planned the untimely death of Valor until she learned that he put all his money back into the company, which his will dictates will be handed over to a board of trustees upon his death, leaving her with a fair but decidedly un-luxurious estate.

Interesting suggestions. I don't think I'll go with the inheritance aspect, but it could be that Luna has been setting up Dartmoor all along to kill Valor. Dartmoor will realize he is a pawn, because he is going for a political revenge, and will see that people are trying to steer his actions.
