On Vox: Don't miss out on Crystal Rain

Crystal Rain
Tobias S. Buckell
Tobias Buckell's first novel is an awesome science fiction novel, full of: swash-buckling adventure, steam punk, nanotechnology, and even a star ship.

More importantly, the characters have depth, seem plausible, and captivated my interest. And they're not all white! Actually, most are shades of brown (being either Aztec or Afro-Caribbean).

The preface to this book intrigued me, but then the first thirty pages seemed to drag. I started wondering if this was really a fantasy novel, and a bad mish-mash of cultures. I kept reading, however, for the promise of the preface, and was rewarded in spades, as the steam punk kicked in, adventure kicked into gear, and explanations that made sense were provided.

I'm looking forward to reading his second book, Ragamuffin.

Thanks for posting the review, Michele. I saw this one recently on the bookstore shelves and wondered about it. Maybe I'll pick it up next time I run in there. Sounds like an interesting blend of ideas.

I saw this recommended on pats_hotlist. I'm glad I picked it up, as it has a different flavor than any of the other SF I'm reading.

It is a pretty neat cover. The depiction of the main character seems fairly reasonable - but the other guy should have been an Aztec.

Every book I see now seems to have an airship on the cover.

OK, slight exaggeration, but only slight.

OK, just for you, I promise that the next book I review won't have an airship on the cover. ;-) Of course, this is easy, as none of the books in my TBR pile have an airship on the cover.
