This weekend I read an article in Realms of Fantasy (how did I purchase the October 2007 issue in August) about the orphan as archetype, when I was struck by an idea for Mysterious Paris that ups the conflict and stakes - and I hope will eliminate the need for some of the less exciting bits.

I already wrote a new draft of one of the scenes (last scene of the first chapter), but now I'll have to work through how it plays out in the rest of the book! I also rewrote a couple of scenes (but not so drastically) early on, to make the attraction a little stronger at the start. This change also means scenes will play out differently later on.

What a great weekend, so much accomplished.

I do that, too, regarding RoF, where you just were reading some random thing and it coalesced into something huge for a story. Funny how that works, and I think shows that our writing is never very far from our thoughts.

The October issue is the most recent, as the magazine comes out every three months--don't worry, no time warp or anything. :)

I must admit that when I saw the article was about orphans, I did think of Mysterious Paris. Manon isn't an orphan, but she is dealing with the death of her mother. I wasn't actively thinking of the story while reading, but my mind was primed :-)

It's an old tradition in the magazine market to bring issues out long before their cover date, so that they are still seen as current for a longer period and have a chance to sell before over-zealous newsagents clear the racks and throw them back at pubilshers. Certainly comics are regularly dated about three months in advance of their actual release date.

See, I told you those journals would prove to be useful ... ;)

I thought you recommended OnSpec. I had heard of ROF from lots of people. I'll post when I get to OnSpec (after I finish ROF, I'll probably read a book, then OnSpec).
