The Great Pumpkin Patch

Today, when I visited the farm to pick up my CSA basket, I was handed a pair of clippers and sent to the pumpkin patch to harvest a large pumpkin.

Here it is at home, sitting next to this week's small pumpkin, last week's small pumpkin, the previous week's spaghetti squash, and this week's apples.

The apples look small next to the large pumpkin. They are big. And did you notice the size of that spaghetti squash? The green onions at this time of year are huge! They are just as long as the leeks.

This week's basket contained corn, tomatoes, garlic, Irish cobbler potatoes, butternut squash, leeks, green onions, red onions, hot peppers, a small pumpkin, honey crisp apples, pears, and a jar of black currant jam. I was inspired to make a shepherd's pie with ground beef, garlic, corn, leeks, and mashed potatoes. Corn and leeks go well in shepherd's pie. And now I have left-overs for several nights.

Lovely pumpkin. I was looking at sugar pumpkins this past weekend for making my own pumpkin pies at the market this weekend. They're beatiful!

Funny, I just made a recipe yesterday of macaroni and cheese with butternut squash. It was really good, although maybe a touch on the sweet side. It's on the Better Homes and Gardens site, called Cheesy Butternut Squash Cavatappi Bake. I've never cooked a butternut squash before and I really liked the taste of it, so I'm definitely going to buy another one.

oh, wait... it uses actual cheese. :-( Someone told me about using butternut squash as a cheese substitute in some recipes.

Oh, you don't do cheese? You could probably try this without adding the cheese then, as it did seem to be just extra topping, and not integral to the sauce itself.

My local supermarket didn't have fontina cheese, so I just used a combo of cheddar and jack and it was still good.
