The recipe in Apples for Jam had me make twice as much ground beef sauce as the dish needs. I didn't mind as this ground beef sauce is delicious. The 1.5 cups of white wine and the cinnamon stick give it the great flavor.

Too bad you can't smell the meat sauce. Oddly, I have since learned that this cookbook says "pan" to refer to a pot, and "frying pan" for what I think of as a pan.

First, we had spaghetti with ground beef.

Then, I used the remaining ground beef sauce as the base of sheppard pie.

All I had to do was add peas and mashed potatoes and bake.

As the meat layer seemed a bit thin, I used a thick layer of mashed potatoes.

homemade shepherd's pie can't be beat :), White wine and a cinnamon stick, who thinks to even try these things? Food genius, is what it is, and I shall try that.

My understanding is that shepherd's (sheep herder's) pie is made with lamb mince, cottage pie is made with beef mince.

Thanks for the tip! I recently saw a recipe for cottage pie, but I didn't know what made them different. I guess this was actually cottage pie.
