Decked out

Thanks to a recommendation from exsanguinated, I picked up headphones for my iPod.

I didn't see anything I wanted at The Source, but ended up picking up something very similar to these:

at the Sony Store. I like how the cords are retractable... means no tangled cord when I stash them in my purse.

I subscribed to EscapePOD, a free (donation-supported) SFF PODzine with some awesome authors. Does anyone know how to get podcasts to NOT show up in the list of albums? Will shuffle be smart enough not to pick podcasts?

As I write, I'm picking the audio book (MP3 recordings) of Scalzi's The Sagan Diaries. Of course, as these are MP3s, I expect that they'll ended up being treated as music tracks by the iPod. Anyone know of a way to change that?

I'm not sure how much I'll listen to non-music... but, we'll see. Perhaps I'll alternate reading before bed with being read to. ;-)

How do they sound for music? (Also, if I can ask, how much did they set you back?) I need new headphones, but I've been waffling for a long time on which to get.

They were $39 at the Sony Store.... possibly less expensive if you can find them elsewhere.

I was satisfied with them for music, but I don't think I notice the quality as long as they're not crappy. I also haven't done extensive listening.

are you subscribing to the podcast via the itunes store? if so, the podcast won't come up in the shuffle. otherwise, select the podcast in the itunes interface and right-click and choose 'get info'. on the 'options' tab there's a checkbox for 'skip when shuffling.' also handy is the checkbox for 'remember playback position,' which remembers where you were in a long audio file if you stop listening and come back to it later.

Thanks for the tips! No, I subscribed via the EscapePOD website (which didn't take me to the iTunes store).

As I now have an MP3 book (Scalzi's The Sagan Diaries), that's a good tip to know.

That turned out to be the setting for my podcasts, but not for the mp3 audio book recordings.

However, despite that setting, my podcasts always go back to the start. :-(

Plus, today, even 'though I didn't set my iPod as a disk, today Windows decided to open it as a disk! And then after syncing was complete, it still showed the scary "do not disconnect" screen, and I couldn't eject it from Windows. So, I bit the bullet and unplugged it, and all seems well.
